Religious Views

Hey there, I was just wondering if any of you are religious, and if so what do you think of Genetic Modification? Many religious groups have dubbed it as "Playing God", what do you think of this commonly used phrase? Does your religion influence your views on Genetic modification?

I have included a quote that I found particularly interesting, it is from Unnamed professor who is “connected with the Chicago Center for Religion and Science”

“God is urging us to become active agents of creation and evolution, correcting His mistakes as we grow in our understanding of His creation”

I also found a quote from the bible that appears to condemn people tinkering with organisms.

“Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be  rooted up.” (Matthew 15:13)

So what do you guys think?

  1. I think religion and science don't mix lol.

I'm not religious but I do have my own reservations about GM, but they're not exactly moral ones, more along the lines of who holds the patent. Say someone GMs a crop so that it feeds the world's starving population, they have the right to patent that and extort profits. How long before all our crops have patent holders? Something worth thinking about.

    1. Yeah I agree, this is the same with some pharmaceutics, they're unable to reach LEDC's due to patents.

  2. This quote from Bible can't be taken literally. In this case, the plant will be a person who doesn't believe in God.

    1. Yeah that's what I thought. As GM crops are a new phenomenon, there are very few biblical quotes that could be potentially interpreted as either for or against it. This is a quote often cited by religious sceptics.

  3. What a fantastic blog! Following you now!
